Abstract
Laryngeal papilloma is the most common benign tumor of the larynx. There are two major types, viz, simple and multiple. A third type hyperkeratotic, is also identified by the pathologists. Multiple type occurs usually in childhood mainly in 5 to 7 years old age group and has the same ratio in both sexes.
The virus is strongly thought, by most authors, to be the causative agent. Simple type develops chiefly at 30 to 50 years of age and is twice as frequent iii males than in females, and is usually located at the anterior 2/3 of the vocal cords. Hyperkeratotic type shoves a strong tendency for malignant transformation. (reported as 3 to 5%). .
We have classified 57 patients having laryngeal papillomas who visited the Department of Otolaryngology, SNUH, during , the period of 1963, to 1970, in several clinical points. Results;
1. In children under the age of 15, males accounted for 20 of the cases and females for 10. In the adult group 16 were male and 11 were female.
2. 25 patients developed papilloma at the vocal cords, 8 in the subglottic region and 3 in the supra-glottic region. 21 patients exhibited papilloma in two or three regions of supraglottic, glottic and subglottic divisions.
3. In previously operated patients, 21 were multiple while only J was simple type. In patients who had not been operated, 14 were simple and 21 were multiple type.
4. In children, 4 were simple and 26 were multiple type. In adults, simple type were it and 16 were multiple type.
